book 1 Chapters 7-8, book 2 Chapters 1-2;

(Chapter 7, Pg. 90) "Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious."

This quote stood out to me because Winston wrote it while thinking about the proles. Winston believes that the proles have the ability to overthrow the Party, which he would enjoy because he wants the Party to be overthrown. The problem with this is that the proles don't care and they won't care until after they overthrow the Party. If you've never had anything different, you won't really know how different things can be. I think Winston's perfect world is the proles rebelling, but that won't happen.

(Chapter 8, Pg. 127) "At any rate, one question was settled. There was no doubting any longer that the girl was spying on him. She must have followed him here, because it was not credible that by pure chance she should have happened to be walking on the same evening up the same obscure backstreet."

This quote made me question why Winston cared so much as to why this girl was following him. I would be scared too, but he has thought really hard about it. I think that Winston is very afraid of this girl and what she could do to him. Winston might think that she wants to vaporize him because he looks suspicious. This made me think about the fear that the Party places on people. The fear is supposed to force them to make the decisions the Party wants them to make. This made me think about how powerful fear is. Winston is afraid of a girl he doesn't even know because of his own thoughts and the fact that there is no possible way the she would've taken the same route as he did. At first I thought that the girl who was following him was bad at following people and being sneaky. Now I think that this girl that is following him might want to be seen by Winston. She might be making herself noticeable so that Winston will become curious about her. Or she might want him to be afraid of her. Whatever her intentions are by making herself noticeable, I do not think that they are meant to be rude.

(Chapter 2, Pg. 154) "It was something in your face. I thought I'd take a chance. I'm good at spotting people who don't belong. As soon as I saw you I knew you were against THEM."

This quote is from Julia in response to Winston. Winston questioned what attracted her to him. I think this is really weird because she basically said that she likes him because of his dislike for the Party (THEM). Julia seems like a person who does what she wants when she wants and doesn't care. And with that non-caring aspect of her personality, I don't think she really cares about Winston as much as it seems. This might be a bad thing because Winston is lonely and he might put all of his loneliness into Julia. He could get all wrapped up in Julia and not focus on himself anymore, which is bad because then he might get caught by the Party.
