book 3 Chapters 4-6;

(Chapter 5 pg. 362) "'Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!’"

This shows how Winston is weak. Winston thought that he loved Julia but he really didn't. Winston also thought that he was stronger than he actually was. When I read about rats earlier in the book I guessed that they would be used later on. Rats are very scary, but I think that they are personal to Winston. That makes me wonder why Winston is so afraid of rats. It could be something from his past life or worse. I think it is interesting how at first Winston wanted to harm himself if it meant that Julia would be okay. It is also weird that he would say something like "strip her to the bones." He wants to sacrifice Julia in the worst way possible.

(Chapter 6 pg. 369) "'I betrayed you,' she said badly. ' 'I betrayed you,' he said. She gave him another quick look of dislike."

This is Julia and Winston speaking to each other after they were tortured. It shows how they betrayed each other. This makes me wonder if Winston and Julia should feel bad that they betrayed each other. I think that they should because they went and did all of those crimes for nothing since they got caught. I did not really think that they would betray each other, I thought that it would be one or the other. I think that it is interesting that Julia said that she betrayed Winston first. It shows how Julia always takes charge. This also makes me wonder if they will ever rebel again since they don't have anybody to trust.

(Chapter 6 pg. 376) "He loved Big Brother."

I think that this quote is important because it shows how Winston thinks now. Winston now thinks that Big Brother is great after all and can do anything. No matter how hard you try to rebel, Big Brother will always find you. I think that Winston knows that Big Brother will get him if he does not obey the laws.

book 1 Chapters 2-6;

(Chapter 3, Pg. 38) "He could not remember what had happened, but he knew in his dream that in some way the lives of his mother and sister had been sacrificed to his own. It was one of those dreams which, while retaining the characteristic dream scenery, are a continuation of one's intellectual life, and in which one becomes aware of facts and ideas which still seem new and valuable after one is awake. The thing that now suddenly struck Winston was that his mother's death, nearly thirty years ago, had been tragic and sorrowful in a way that was no longer possible." This quote stood out to me because it talks about Winston's background. It took three chapters for us to get to a little bit of Winston's past, and he doesn't even remember it. Usually, close family members play a big part in a person's life. For Winston it's different. All he knows is that they are no longer in his life and that he has to life his life no matter what. This made me th...

book 1 Chapters 7-8, book 2 Chapters 1-2;

(Chapter 7, Pg. 90) "Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious." This quote stood out to me because Winston wrote it while thinking about the proles. Winston believes that the proles have the ability to overthrow the Party, which he would enjoy because he wants the Party to be overthrown. The problem with this is that the proles don't care and they won't care until after they overthrow the Party. If you've never had anything different, you won't really know how different things can be. I think Winston's perfect world is the proles rebelling, but that won't happen. (Chapter 8, Pg. 127) "At any rate, one question was settled. There was no doubting any longer that the girl was spying on him. She must have followed him here, because it was not credible that by pure chance she should have happened to be walking on the same evening up the same obscure backstreet." ...
