(Chapter 3, Pg. 165) "She had had her first love-affair when she was sixteen, with a Party member of sixty who later committed suicide."
This quote stood out to me because it shows Julia's background. A weird part about this is that the Party member was old and Winston is also old and she might be attracted to older men. Also, Julia has been a rebel for a while. I think that she finds every and anyway to rebel against the Party and their rules. This makes her character interesting. If she is looking for every and anyway to rebel against the Party and their rules, does that mean that she only likes Winston because being with him is rebellious? I think that she does not really like him as much as Winston thinks she does.
(Chapter 4, Pg. 175) "He wished that they were walking through the streets with her just as they were doing now but openly and without fear, talking of trivialities and buying odds and ends for the household.
This quote shows how much Winston likes the feelings of being with someone. I don't think that he really only likes Julia. Winston just likes not being alone. Before, he was alone in his thoughts and his life. Now he has someone who doesn't like the Party and will be with him when he is alone. He wants to do things that will keep him feeling the feeling that he has now. The problem is that Winston hasn't really felt this way about anyone. He doesn't know what people who like each other do and he has to base it off of his imagination.
(Chapter 5, Pg. 189) "The process of life had ceased to be intolerable, he had no longer any impulse to make faces at the telescreen or shout curses at the top of his voice."
This quote shows how Winston's mood has changed. Winston is no longer unhappy with his life. He doesn't focus on only the negatives of his life anymore. The reasoning for this is that Julia has come into his life and has made his sad life less sad. I think that this is good for Winston because everybody should have happiness, but I think that Winston will lose focus of his life and only cater to Julia. I do not think that Winston is completely happy because he is still under the Party's rules and that does not make him happy.
